10 lessons for national health care reform

President Obama and a Democratic-controlled Congress have made health care reform a priority for the first time in 15 years. In the past two weeks, the House and Senate have released draft bills whose key features closely resemble the policies hotly debated previously in California. Although the economic situation in 2007-2008 derailed health care reform in California, it is today’s economic crisis that may make national reform a reality.

The status quo is simply not a sustainable option. The increasing economic insecurity that Americans and their families face is mirrored in the worsening financial situation of employers, state governments, private insurers and health providers. The president and Congress must act now. (more…)

Congress aim to enact health care reform

President Obama on June 2 said the “make or break period” for action on health care reform legislation is between now and the August recess. Following a White House meeting on health care legislation, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., predicted a health care reform bill would reach the president’s desk in October. Baucus said that “all options are on the table” and indicated that the president “might consider” proposals to tax employer-provided health insurance.

Hypertension in the Hospital

While blood pressure control may be a crude, if not poor, gague of overall treatment success or failure, it is one medical concept that most patients can understand.
